Comic-Con Museum

The Myth of Superheroes!, is the featured exhibit at the Comic-Con Museum in San Diego at Balboa Park. The exhibit is running through February 15th. It dives into the link between Greek and Roman mythology and today superheroes. It takes a historical look at the gods of these ancient times and how many of them correlate to the superheroes we see in our modern-day stories. This exhibit talks about the creation of superheroes, the evolution of superheroes, and the future of superheroes!

I particularly enjoyed this exhibit because it was not only entertaining, but educational. I have a student in high school and she recently finished studying Greek mythology and it was a great experience to have her see the parallels between pop culture and ancient culture. We were also in the museum with lots of younger kids, and they were genuinely captivated by the imagery and the storytelling process. I would say this is a safe bet that kids of all ages will enjoy the sixth of it.

After exploring the main exhibit floor, we moved up to the Gallery level and viewed the art of the hosted artist. We noticed that there was an opportunity for free comic books here and that was excellent! We went into the art room and we had to witness a lot of fan art, and it was inspiring and fun to see everyone do their best at sharing their favorite superhero.
We ended our visit with a trip to the bottom floor and there was a Betty Boop exhibit. Having it be January we recently watched a lot of National Lampoon‘s Christmas Vacation and it was interesting for me to see that the voice of Betty Boop was the Great Aunt in the film. When you think back you really can hear the similarities of the voices. Downstairs there was also a Looney Tunes exhibit featuring some beautiful art on display.
However, my favorite part of the museum was the cosplay exhibit. There was a collection of cosplay costumes from past Comic-Con masquerades. It was interesting to read about the creative process for the development of these costumes. A lot of the costumes were quite intricate, and I value the fans interpretation of a character more than the straight up copy. I was quite impressed by the creativity shown in many of these costumes.
At the start of our visit, we elected to participate in the scavenger hunt. Throughout the day, we searched for the answers to the scavenger hunt and participated in sharing our insight on our visit. At the end of our stay, we turned in our paper and received an exclusive reward! We were there at the beginning of the day, so they still had some of their exclusive Comic-Con bags filled with goodies! They also offered several limited-edition posters!
To finish our trip to the museum, we stopped in the gift shop and absolutely needed to pick up a couple of souvenirs! They had an exclusive Pokémon that we had been looking for in several other game shops and we also grabbed museum merch! After our visit we spent some time walking around Balboa Park and enjoyed some of the free activities available.
If you’ve never been to the San Diego Comic-Con and have been dying to get tickets, I highly recommend joining the Comic-Con museum membership at the legends level. This support level includes ONE four-day pass to Comic-Con each year if you renew your membership. This is the only way to ensure you receive a badge year after year without waiting in the online queue!
We are looking forward to returning to the Comic-Con Museum to check out future exhibits! Thank you to the comic museum for inviting us to attend to create this review.
